How are you still single?
It may be your intention to share a compliment, but it doesn’t negate the fact that it’s more of a rhetorical question and more likely to land as an insult. Not one single girl/guy escapes well-intended friends and family members asking the same thing, however, even worse when it’s the first message from a text. Singles routinely receive messages that are more insulting but this one stings every time. This should be obvious, but sadly isn’t.
“How are you still single, presumes something is “wrong” with this person who happens to be single.
We’re supposed to be in friendly territory here. Getting to know perfect strangers is an Art. An Art that comes from curiosity. It’s my practice to empower divorced women with Curious Questions in a fun, lite and flirty way that allows them to focus on compatibility not judgment. Questions that align them with potential compatible partners. When you come from curiosity without judging a person, you’ll never have to worry about hurting someone’s feelings or making a good impression. If you happen to meet someone who’s been single for a while, instead of asking “why are you still single” ask a much wiser question coming from curiosity like … “How have you spent your free time?” This way you’ll negate feeling embarrassed when they answer “Aren’t you lucky!”
It’s my professional opinion that when singles learn to ask curious questions that are meaningful to them, they’ll quickly recognize like minded people, get off the singles market and into that long awaited loving relationship they deserve.
